Mouth & Jaw
The Kois Deprogrammer – developed by dentist Dr. John Kois – is a device similar to a retainer, which helps your dentist determine the stability of your existing bite.
When a person chews or swallows, their jaw is automatically adjusted to accommodate the respective process. An imperfect position can cause a variety of issues, such as facial pain, or worn, broken or loose teeth.
In our dental office, we use the Deprogrammer to remove the influence of a patient’s teeth from their chewing system, allowing us to discern the position of their natural bite and, therefore, design the correct treatment plan for maximum comfort.
A night guard, also known as an occlusal splint, can be simply described as a form of retention for those suffering from Temporomandibular Joint Disorder (TMD).
The night guard is a small plastic mechanism that is placed over the upper or lower teeth, depending on the specific problem. It features a splint using which the dentist can adjust the movement of the upper and lower teeth, the way that they are joined, and the overall position of the jaw.
At Smile Designer, we take great care in correctly adjusting the splint so that the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is more relaxed, which helps reduce grinding and pain.
The temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is similar to a sliding hinge that connects your jawbone to your skull.
Sometimes a patient can suffer from Temporomandibular Joint Disorder (TMD), symptoms of which include painful movement or locking of the jaw, as well as a clicking sound while chewing.
Grinding or clenching teeth and stress are the leading causes of TMD, often resulting in chronic migraines.
In our dental office, we will work with you to explore all the possible treatments and remedies for your TMJ problems.
